Board members are the most important players in the performance of a business, therefore their decisions can are a major factor in the success of the company. In order to make the right decision they must have all the relevant information in the shortest amount of time feasible and weighing all potential risks. This is why it’s crucial to know what the board wants to achieve with your presentation and why your presentation must be focused on achieving that purpose.
The best method to do this is to put your most important data points in context. You can’t simply present the conversion rate of an innovative product. It is important to explain to the board how it compares with industry averages or expectations. If the board can draw the right decisions based upon the data they are seeking it will be easier to convince them of your suggestions or your future plans.
Do some research on the background of the board members and their interests before presenting. This will help you anticipate questions they could ask and then incorporate them into your presentation, or come up with a considered answer for questions at the end of the presentation. I’ve seen presentations where the presenter attempted to guess the nature of the question however if they answered it wrong it can cause a major impact on their credibility.
